Melissa McCreary - Violin, Viola, Cello, and Oboe

Ms. McCreary began playing the oboe in the 5th grade, in Prince William County, Virginia. She continued to play through high school, participating in many All-County and All-Regional Bands and Orchestras, festivals, and honors groups. She attended West Virginia University, after having received a full-tuition performance scholarship. While at West Virginia University, she played oboe in the University Symphony for four years. She played alto saxophone with the University Marching Band and played oboe with many small ensembles. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1992, with a bachelor's degree in music education.




After graduating, Ms. McCreary worked in Harford County, Maryland as an orchestra teacher. She taught in the public school system for seven years, and at John Carroll Catholic School for two. While in the public school system, Ms. McCreary worked with all levels of string students, from beginners through high school. She taught herself viola and performed with the Sesquehanna Symphony for several years. She was also manager of the Harford String Orchestra and the Harford Youth Orchestra, out of Harford Community College.




In 2002, Ms. McCreary moved to Fredericksburg and began playing viola with the group now called the Mary Washington University Philharmonic. After a three-year break to attend school, she returned to Fredericksburg in 2007. She continued to play with the Mary Washington Philharmonic on viola. She also played oboe and viola with the Rappahannock Pops Orchestra at that time.




Currently, Ms. McCreary performs with the St. George's Chamber Ensemble at St. George's Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg. She also plays with the Fredericksburg Community Concert Band and as needed with the Rappahannock Pops Orchestra. Primarily, she plays oboe and english horn, with viola as an alternative.
